Feline Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is suitable for all cats. Cats lead active lives, full of energy and motion. and can sometimes have injuries caused by falls and bumps, traffic accidents, repetitive twisting, or even old age may take its toll.

Physiotherapy can help physical problems and conditions associated with ageing, and injuries  or diseases of:

  • Muscles, ligaments, tendons

  • Joints : arthritis/degenerative joint disease, injury, pain/ swelling/stiffness in joints

  • Spinal pain /problems - such as disc disease

  • Movement dysfunction

  • Post operative rehabilitation following orthopaedic or neurological surgery

  • Neurological conditions

  • Fractures : treatment and rehabilitation to facilitate healing and restoration of function

If your cat has any of these symptoms, physiotherapy can help:

  • Pain or discomfort

  • Difficulty jumping up or down

  • Crying when getting up or lying down

  • Reluctance to play or exercise

  • Unusual posture

  • Unusual behaviour

  • Lameness

  • Contractures following road traffic accidents

  • Poor muscle development

  • Pre and post-operative care

Cat Treatments

Painful movement due to injury or arthritis causes decreased mobility and muscle atrophy, in turn leading to more pain and decreased function.  Physiotherapy can control and reverse this vicious cycle of pain. The techniques we use help to identify and prevent injury before it happens or becomes chronic.

When should Physiotherapy commence?

Physiotherapy should commence soon after the injury or surgery, in the veterinary hospital if possible, or once your cat returns home. This doesn't mean strenuous exercise! Gentle movements and techniques helps to reduce pain and stimulate healing, as well as decrease swelling and prevent muscle wasting.

What should I expect when you treat my cat?

I visit cats in their own home environment as often hazards such as slippery floors, stairs, incorrect bedding and exercise type / routines can be advised on.

Cats are more relaxed at home and all members of the family can get involved.

The number of sessions required will depend on the nature and severity of the condition.
